Questions about this product?
Tiffen 4" x 4" 85 Neutral Density Filters (ND or N.D.) reduce the amount of light passing through the camera lens and change tungsten balanced film for use in daylight. Especially useful in bright light conditions to help prevent over exposure. Allows proper exposure at wider lens openings, for reduced depth-of-field, and to highlight a key subject by making foreground and/or background out of focus. Permits slower shutter speeds for blurred motion effects in still photography. The 85 portion of the filter changes the film's Kelvin temperature from 3200 degrees to 5600 degrees and creates a loss of 1/3 stop. 100 ISO film becomes 64 ISO. When selecting an 85N3 filter, the ND 0.3 portion (also known as N3) allows you to open the camera aperture an additional one full stop OR, on motion picture cameras you can reduce the frame rate by 50% (24fps to 12fps). For still photography you can reduce the shutter speed by 50% (1/250th to 1/125th) ISO 100 becomes ISO 32. When selecting an 85N6 filter, the ND 0.6 portion (also known as N6) allows you to open the camera aperture an additional two full stops OR, on motion picture cameras you can reduce the frame rate by cutting it in half twice (24fps to 12 fps to 6fps). For still photography you can reduce the shutter speed by half twice (1/250th to 1/125th to 1/64th) ISO 100 becomes ISO 16. When selecting an 85N9 filter, the ND 0.9 portion (also known as N9) allows you to open the camera aperture an additional three full stops OR, on motion picture cameras you can reduce the frame rate by cutting it in half three times:(24fps to 12 fps to 6fps to 3fps). For still photography you can reduce the shutter speed by half three times: (1/250th to 1/125th to 1/64th to 1/30th) ISO 100 becomes ISO 8. When selecting an 85N1.2 filter, the ND 1.2 portion (also known as N12) allows you to open the camera aperture an additional four full stops OR, on motion picture cameras you can reduce the frame rate by cutting it in half four times:(24fps to 12 fps to 6fps to 3fps to 1.5fps). For still photography you can reduce the shutter speed by half four times: (1/250th to 1/125th to 1/64th to 1/30th to 1/15th)ISO 100 becomes ISO 4.
